bringing back the mangrove forests of mombasa

Impact Adventures has partnered with Brain Youth Group, a community-based organization in Mombasa dedicated to bringing back the region’s mangrove forests.

Together, the two partners are planting 50,000 mangroves in a 10-Hectare plot located at Tudor Creek, south of Mombasa. The area use to be home to a vast mangrove forest spanning 1,800 Hectare. Today, there is only 200 Hectare of forest. Planting activities commenced in September 2021 and are expected to conclude by March 2022.

This project is designed to serve as s pilot for what will be a 100 million mangrove planting partnership between Impact Adventures, Kenya Forest Service, as well as community groups such as Brain Youth Group. The planting activities in Kenya are linked to a matching scheme in the UAE spearheaded by the Ministry of Interior’s Khalifa Empowerment Programme (AQDAR). That campaign was initiated by AQDAR in celebration of the UAE’s 50th anniversary which takes place on December 2, 2021.

With the initial planting phase completed, thanks to funding provided by Dubai-based digital media firm Dimension N, the monitoring and evaluation work has commenced to track the survival rate of the trees planted.

The team is also going to geo-map the areas that are being reforested so that it can be tracked by satellite imagery. An audit will be conducted in January 2022 to determine what will be the CO2 sequestration capacity over the lifetime of these 50,000 trees.

Impact Adventures is pioneering a reforestation drive in Kenya which aims to leverage socio-economic activities derived from the forest to finance the reforestation costs. Additional funding will be drawn from carbon offset projects that will be adopted at the origination phase of these large scale projects.
